The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks a Grants Accountant for its Grants Department within the Accounting team. The Grants Accountant is responsible for ensuring compliance with US government, foreign government embassies and aid agencies (such as DFID, Sida, DANIDA, etc.), foundations and other multi-lateral entities, etc. organizational regulations relating to the financial administration of NDI's grants, awards and contracts. The position will focus mainly on administration functions that include but are not limited to preparation of drawdowns, maintaining various monitoring schedules and closeout of projects/grants.


  • Assist with various tasks of setting up and closing of different NDI projects
  • Prepare cash drawdowns/billings to donors
  • Maintain NDI's letter of credit accounts with the US government and related payment tracking reports
  • Prepare financial reports, including necessary reconciliations, for submission to donors
  • Maintain proposal log and other management reports such as Project Management Report, drawdown summary, exchange rate schedules, etc
  • Process agreements and modifications (Costpoint updating, filing, follow up, etc.)
  • Assist with maintaining budget and salary templates
  • Research and prepare cost transfer journal entries
  • Prepare US government and non-US government deferred revenue schedules
  • Maintain records and prepare journal entries for bank interest earned on award payments
  • Review and prepare project closeouts as well as maintain appropriate files
  • Conduct basic budget reviews of donor proposal budgets
  • Assist with the preparation of audit schedules and reports for NDI's Board of Directors
  • Coordinate with the other units of Accounting, such as General Accounting, International Accounting and Subgrants
  • Assist Financial Analysts and Grants Manager as required
  • Other assignments as necessary


  • BS/BA in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field, and 2-5 years relevant experience; Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on a one-for-one basis
  • Working knowledge of federal regulations such as the Uniform Administrative Requirements (UAR), formerly OMB Circulars A-110, A-122 and A-133, as they relate to the financial administration of grants and cooperative agreements
  • Demonstrated ability to read, analyze and interpret regulations
  • Working knowledge of proposal development, budgeting and project financial management
  • Strong spreadsheet and computerized accounting skills, including working knowledge of Costpoint or other accounting-related software; resourceful through technology and research skills
  • Self-initiative and follow-through in day-to-day duty requirements with minimal supervision to manage high volume work flow
  • Analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to identify/define and solve issues
  • Good judgment and decision-making to execute responsibilities and duties
  • Perform detail-oriented work with a high level of accuracy
  • Good interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff
  • Good oral and written communication skills to effectively present detailed financial information and respond to questions
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team
